Equality and Diversity Course Contents

Equality and diversity is all about treating people fairly and with respect, no matter what their differences may be.This training programme looks at how we behave at work and how our behaviour may affect those around us. It addresses unacceptable behaviour, stereotyping and discrimination as well as introducing characteristics protected by the Equality Act – suggesting ways in which to build a more supportive, harmonious workplace.

An open and inclusive workplace has many benefits – both to the organisation and to individuals; such benefits include an increase in morale, better staff retention and improved company reputation. Where employees are treated fairly and with respect, this will be reflected in their work – with better working environments leading to better overall performance and productivity.

1. Unacceptable

This section looks at stereotyping, discrimination and prejudice, victimisation and harassment – behaviour that The Equality Act does NOT allow – behaviour which is not only unacceptable, but which is also against the law.

The Equality Act calls thisprohibited conduct‘.

2. Protected

We are all different, no one is exactly the same as anyone else. Some of our differences are  ‘protected characteristics and are given particular protection by law.

This section looks at these protected characteristics – age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.

Each of the characteristics is separated into three parts, firstly describing the characteristic, then information about ‘what employers should consider’ and finally explaining ‘what you can do’. There are also examples of situations where the equality rules have been broken.

Discriminating against people because of any of these 9 characteristics is illegal.

 Test & Certificate

This Equality and Diversity training programme concludes with a 20 question multiple choice test with printable certificate. In addition, brief in-course questionnaires guide the user through the sections of the training, and are designed to reinforce learning and ensure maximum user engagement throughout.

3. The Benefits of Equality and Diversity

This section looks at the benefits of promoting equality and diversity in the workplace, both for the organisation and for the people who work there.

No one wants to face discrimination or harassment at work and this is unlikely to happen in an organisation which proactively supports diversity.
